Road to Wiah Clan
Road to Wiah Clan

We drove to Weala, a town in Liberia along the highway from Monrovia to Gbarnga, in hopes of interviewing market women who would travel between Kakata and Gbarnga during the civil war. Since it had not rained for three days (a rare occurrence during rainy season!) and roads were relatively dry, we decided to make the trip into a few rural clans to interview clan chiefs about the war and about the post-war elections.

Unfinished Ministry of Defense

Unfinished Ministry of Defense

The Ministry of Defense building under President Samuel Doe was never finished. In 2016, during my first visit to Liberia, the building stood towering over the Peace Island community --- home to one of the largest ex-combatant communities in Monrovia. When I returned in 2018, the unfinished Ministry of Defense building had been demolished and replaced with a new government complex.

Firestone Plantation

Firestone Plantation

In 1990, Charles Taylor invaded the Firestone rubber plantation in Margibi County. As he took control of the rest of the country, he set up Taylorland, which stretched across 90% of the country. In 1992, Firestone officially restarted business in Liberia after striking a deal with Taylor. The company would pay taxes to Taylor's new government and hire Liberians in exchange for security and peace.
